Sat 5th May - My First Day -Tuen Mun the Gold Coast

Hong Kong was overcast and only about 25c when I arrived at 1.25pm. I was met at the airport by my friend Shirley - which was a novel experience and normally I just arrive and get the airport bus to my hotel. But I am planning to go with Shirley to church tomorrow so I will stay the night in Tuen Mun (where her church is loacted) at the Gold Coast Resort Hotel - which I have to say is rather nice - my room is definitely 5 Star standard, though the wi-fi connection is a bit pants.

Had a brief wonder round Hong Kong airports surprisingly quiet new shopping mall and a quick sit down and drink at the Double Star Cafe before hopping on a bus to Tuen Mun and then a taxi to the Gold Coast Resort Hotel.

Let me say from the very start that Hong Kong is many, many things but for me and many others, one of the greatest things about Hong Kong is its FOOD and this blog will reflect this. I'm not talking about fine dining in expensive restaurants or fancy venues - which Hong Kong has plenty of, but of the the ordinary food of the people - street food, Hong Kong style fast food, the food the avaerage worker eats on a day today basis and also the stuff he/she has when they want to treat themselves. So be prepared for a serious amount of food images in addition to the sights of Hong Kong. Enjoy!

So we arrive at the Gold Coast Hotel , here is the view from my room - its a bit overcast but maybe I'll get a really glorious sunrise tomorrow morning - I didn;t - second photo was taken the next morning and still just as overcast and dull. But then Hong Kong is like this more often than not during this time of year.

The plan after a quick wash and brush up and a little rest was to meet for dinner at the local Chilli and Spice Thai style restaurant just along from the hotel with Shirleys sister Fanny and her husband and niece Katrina.

This is where we ate - they had a wonderful display of of seafood which you could choose to be cooked on their charcoal grill - Thai style - we had amongst other things - thai style grilled king prawns, grilled oysters, thai pomelo salad, chicken wings stuffed with sticky rice and hainanese chicken. A very nice proper first meal in Hong Kong.

Look at the size of those prawns!!!!!

We also had Indian Lamb Curry and Roti but I never got any photos of those.

Afterwards Shirley and I took a 14 seater minibus to Yuen Long to have a look at the street food and to try one of the wonderful specialist dessert restaurants-something I had never done before.
